Thunder Lake sits 21 km west of Barrhead, with Thunder Lake Provincial Park wrapping part of its shore. Visitors like the lake views, the well-treed campsites and the calm, uncrowded water. It draws people in winter too, for snowmobiling and ice fishing.
The lake is open to angling under Alberta's sportfishing regulations and holds northern pike and yellow perch; check the current regulations before you go. Reviewers mention good pike fishing from a boat, but shore fishing is hard because of the weeds.
The park has around 125 campsites, many with power, plus a boat launch, dock, beach, playgrounds and forested trails for walking and mountain biking.
