Thunder Bay Lookout is a viewing platform that extends over the edge of a high cliff on the Sibley Peninsula, looking across Lake Superior toward the city and the shoreline. Nearly every reviewer gives it top marks, and several recommend coming around sunset.
Getting there means driving about 9 km of gravel from Highway 587. Reviews are mixed on the road: one visitor made it fine in a small sedan, while another warned that a relative bent a car frame and strongly recommends higher clearance. The last kilometre is the roughest. The road is sometimes closed for conditions, so check the park's alerts first.
There's plenty of parking at the end and a short walk to the platform. The lookout is also the start of the Kabeyun Trail, the park's longest hiking trail, and the gravel road is a popular mountain bike ride. Most visitors pack a picnic.
There are no washrooms, food or other services, so come prepared. You'll need a Sleeping Giant Provincial Park day-use permit. Hold on to children near the edge.
