A challenging climb on the 5 km Ila's Loop north of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, to a set of cliff lookouts over the Algoma Highlands. Free, managed by a conservancy, and very buggy in summer.
Robertson Cliffs rise above Robertson Lake in the Algoma Highlands, about 30 minutes north of Sault Ste. Marie. There are three main lookouts along the top, plus a small one between them. Reviewers say the last and largest is the best: a broad stone ledge with an open, tree-free view over the valley.
The usual route is Ila's Loop, about 5 km through mossy forest, past streams and a waterfall, with steep climbs over rock. Hikers of all fitness levels have made it; one visitor in their early fifties took two hours to reach the top and about three for the round trip. Several found the route hard to follow in places, especially on the way down.
The Algoma Highlands Conservancy maintains the trails and welcomes silent sports only. Camping, campfires, drones and rock climbing are not allowed. The cliffs are a hiking destination rather than a fishing spot. Visitors mention wildlife such as foxes, and fall colour here is a big draw.
Bring plenty of bug spray and wear hiking boots: parts of the trail are swampy and wet even after dry weather. Parking is along Robertson Lake Road, and donations help keep the trails up.
