Orkney Viewpoint sits on the rim of the Red Deer River valley in Kneehill County, west of Drumheller. From the edge you look up and down the river, with layered badlands hills across the valley. Visitors call it one of the best views in the area.
It's much quieter than Drumheller's main stops. Several reviewers had it to themselves, and one couple stayed four hours over a picnic without seeing anyone else. There's plenty of free parking, washrooms, a garbage area and a few benches.
Many people combine it with the Bleriot Ferry across the Red Deer River, one of the few river ferries left in Alberta. It's a dry clifftop viewpoint with no path down to the water, so fishing isn't part of the visit.
The county says it's day use only, and overnight camping isn't allowed. A slide has closed Highway 837, so a recent visitor had to take the ferry to get there. Check Kneehill County's detour notes before you set off.
