Mount McKay rises just south of Thunder Bay on Fort William First Nation land, and its lookout faces the city, the Lake Superior shoreline and the Sleeping Giant across the bay. Reviewers rate the view highly, especially at sunset, and one recently spotted young bald eagles.
You pay at a gate to drive up to the lower lookout; visitors found the staff friendly, and the ticket works all day if you want to come back. The fee is small and card only. Portable toilets near the lot were clean when one visitor used them.
To reach the summit you hike a short but very steep trail, then follow informal paths past towers to the cliff edge, where the wind can be strong. It's for fit, sure-footed hikers. The site also hosts a powwow, which one reviewer suggests timing a visit around.
The old wooden boardwalk at the lower lookout has been replaced with metal fencing, which one regular feels spoils the open view. Check hours before you go, since the site is seasonal and fees have changed over the years.
