A small, leafy Parks Canada park on the walls of Old Québec, with cannons, historic monuments and one of the best views of the St. Lawrence and Château Frontenac. Not to be confused with Montmorency Falls.
Parc Montmorency sits at the top of Côte de la Montagne, right on the edge of Old Québec's upper town. From its lookout, a line of old cannons frames the St. Lawrence River and the Château Frontenac, and several visitors say it's one of the best photo spots in the city. It's green and calm, with benches and plenty of views.
The park has a long history. Parks Canada says the site held the first Episcopal Palace, where the first Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada met in 1792, and the 1864 conference that led to Confederation. Today it's part of the Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site, with gun batteries, statues and monuments, including one to early French settlers Louis Hébert and Marie Rollet.
It's an easy, free stop on a walk through Old Québec, and good for a rest or people-watching. One recent visitor found it less crowded than Dufferin Terrace. In autumn the trees colour up nicely against the river.
Don't mix it up with Montmorency Falls Park east of the city; a few reviews on this pin actually describe the falls, cable car and bus trip there. One reviewer found part of the area under renovation, so a section may be fenced off when you visit.
