Montagne Verte is a small Laurentian peak with a big payoff: along the loop you pass a string of open rock lookouts over Lac Baptiste, Lac des Bouleaux and the surrounding hills, finishing with a full 360-degree view at the top. Reviewers rate it among their favourite hikes within reach of Montréal.

The loop is roughly 3 to 4 km with moderate climbing. Allow about an hour for a brisk walk, or two to three hours with stops for photos and a picnic. Trails are well marked (orange and white blazes), and a newer parking lot has plenty of room. Access is free and the trail is open year-round.

It suits fit beginners and families with older kids who want more than a stroll. Leashed dogs are welcome. One hiker suggests doing the loop clockwise, going left at the start, for the easier direction and to save the best views for last.

Expect some very steep stretches on bare rock, plus roots and mud after rain. A winter hiker found it a bad idea in casual boots, so bring proper footwear or crampons when it's icy. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance and phone signal is only reliable at the top.
