A steep, rugged trail east of Nipigon, ON, climbing past cascades to a 25-metre waterfall, with a longer spur to a lookout over Nipigon Bay. Ropes help on the climb; creeks may need wading.
Mazukama Falls is a 25-metre waterfall in red rock cliffs and old-growth cedar about 20 km east of Nipigon, in the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. The trail follows a creek with smaller cascades on the way up, and hikers say the falls are a satisfying reward even when the flow is low.
The main loop is about 3.1 km and rated difficult. After a quick approach, there's a steep climb of roughly 500 metres, with ropes to hold on some pitches. Creeks must be crossed and can be hazardous in high water; one spring hiker balanced across on a fallen tree. A spur called Wingtip Lookout adds a steeper climb to a view over Nipigon Bay, making for a 4 to 5 hour day.
The trail is maintained by the Nor'Wester Voyageur Trail Club. It's a hiking destination rather than a fishing spot; we haven't found any fishing information for the creek, so check Ontario's regulations if you plan to cast.
Good boots are essential, and cleats help in winter and early spring, when the falls freeze and the trail is icy. One winter visitor warned to check the ice carefully before walking near the frozen falls, as water runs beneath. The trailhead is easy to miss: it's just up Camp 81 Road off Highway 17. Bring bug spray in summer.
