Margaret Falls tumbles about 30 metres down a narrow rock canyon on Reinecker Creek, inside Herald Provincial Park on the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake. Visitors love the walk in almost as much as the falls: old forest, carved rock walls, footbridges over the creek, and cool air even on a hot day.
The main trail is short and nearly level, roughly 5 to 15 minutes from the parking lot, which makes it one of the easiest waterfall stops in the Shuswap. Parking is free, with overflow further down the road, and there are toilets and accessible facilities. You can also walk up from the lakeshore in about half an hour on BC Parks' self-guided nature trail, and a longer Upper Canyon loop climbs above the falls.
It's a favourite with families and road-trippers. The rest of Herald Park has a beach, frontcountry campground and boat launch on Shuswap Lake, where swimming, paddling and fishing are popular, so the falls pair easily with a lake day.
A few practical notes. The viewing platform holds only a handful of people, so expect a short wait at busy times. The canyon is ecologically sensitive: stay on the main trail, as one visitor who strayed onto side paths got a stern word from park staff. BC Parks also warns about thefts from vehicles, so lock valuables away.
