Lookout Mountain is a high point in the Northumberland County Forest, with views across the rolling, wooded hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine. Reviewers say the view at the top is worth the climb, and it's quiet on most days.
The approach is fairly straight and easy for about half the distance, then zig-zags steeply up a dirt path to the top. Families have done it without trouble. There's a shorter route and a longer trail of about 9 km, and free parking at the Woodland Trails trailhead, which has a portable washroom.
The forest is managed for multiple uses, and ATVs are allowed on many trails. One hiker found the shared route to the top noisy and rough with ATVs coming up and down, and would like a separate hiking path.
Signage is the biggest complaint. One visitor drove onto a trail not open to cars and got an expensive ticket, and others found markers missing from the map. Park at the official trailhead and walk in, and check the county forest's website for current trail status first.
