Cranberry Flats is a protected stretch of river valley a few minutes from Saskatoon, where trails wind through sandy hills and tall grass down to the South Saskatchewan River. Visitors come for the valley views and sunsets, crocuses in spring and the feeling of being well away from town.
Meewasin, which manages the site, describes a wheelchair-accessible interpretive trail to a valley lookout plus self-guided nature trails. The wider boardwalk suits strollers, while narrower sandy paths give more of a workout, and most loops return to the large parking lot. Interpretive boards cover local plants and wildlife, parking is free and there's an outhouse a short walk in.
When the river is low, sandbars and sandy beaches appear and people bring food down to the water. It's a popular spot for dog walkers, but dogs must stay on leash and Meewasin issues fines for off-leash dogs. The site is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with fines for being there after hours. We haven't been able to confirm fishing rules for the site yet; check the provincial regulations before you go.
The path down to the water is steep and slippery with loose sand. High water covers the beaches and can wash out trails. Recent visitors warn of ticks and, in late spring, webworms, so do a tick check afterwards.
