Benson Creek Falls Regional Park is a small, steep piece of Vancouver Island forest, all mossy woods, creeks and ravines. Most visitors come for the waterfalls, and especially Ammonite Falls, named for the fossil ammonite shells found in the surrounding rock. Hikers describe the falls as beautiful, though how impressive they are depends on the season.
The Ammonite Falls Regional Trail starts from the Weigles Road parking lot, about 1.5 km from the falls, or from Creekside Place off Jameson Road, about 2.5 km away. Several reviewers say the trail begins wide and smooth, then turns into a proper mountain path with signs marking the harder sections. A viewing platform reached by steep stairs now brings hikers down to the base of the falls. A round trip takes most people an hour and a half to two hours.
It suits active families and anyone comfortable on uneven ground. Dogs are allowed, and one pair of hikers found a quiet spot to hang a hammock. The falls run strongest from late fall through spring; visitors who came in a dry spell found only a trickle and suggest going after rain.
