Willow Rock Campground sits in the Bow Valley with mountain views, close enough to Canmore and Banff for hiking and sightseeing but usually cheaper. Its big advantage is availability: there are around 69 first-come, first-served sites with self check-in, which has saved many last-minute trips.
The lower loop is unserviced, with nicely spaced sites, good privacy and big fire pits. The serviced sites and many others are open and very close together. The grounds are well kept and there is a playground. Showers are hot and run on tokens, about five minutes per token. The shack selling tokens and firewood keeps limited hours, roughly mid-afternoon and early evening, though tokens may also be sold at a nearby store.
It suits campers who want a practical base for Canmore-area hikes, and families like the playground.
The highway is right next door, and several campers say truck and engine noise carries on all night. Tenters and light sleepers should bring earplugs or look elsewhere. Facilities are clean but dated, and a recent camper found many toilets out of order or blocked. It can also be windy.
