Willmore Wilderness Park is a huge, largely undeveloped stretch of the northern Rockies. Visitors say its remoteness is the appeal. There are no motorized vehicles on the trails, no crowds, and the scenery ranks among the best in Canada, according to more than one reviewer.

Most day visitors start at the Sulphur Gates staging area, where a short walk leads to a viewpoint over the meeting of the Sulphur and Smoky rivers. From there, a hike of about 4 km reaches the Eaton Canyon falls, which reviewers call a must-see. The trail is rocky, with steep ups and downs. Small dogs have managed it fine, but you can't climb the falls, only stand at the base. There are a few benches for a picnic and basic toilets at the staging area.

Further in, the park is backpacking and horse country. One group hiked from the Rock Lake trailhead to Eagles Nest and found the trail and campsites well maintained. Riders praise the equestrian trails and the volunteers who build benches and tables, refurbish cabins and cut wood. Hunting and fishing are also part of the park's use.

Come prepared to be self-sufficient. Toilets are very basic, so carry hand sanitizer. Nights get cold even after warm days, and there's no cell service or road access into the backcountry.
