A large riverside Parks Canada campground about 10 minutes from Jasper townsite, still recovering from the 2024 wildfire. Great location and elk sightings, but no shade, no drinking water and no dump station.
Wapiti Campground sits beside the river in Jasper National Park, across the road from Whistlers Campground and a short drive from town and many popular trails. It burned in the 2024 wildfire, and reviewers are frank that the site is now almost completely bare, with burnt trees, no shade and views stretching to the highway. Mountains still rise on both sides, and elk wander through the campground regularly.
Staff at the gate and reception get consistent praise for being friendly and informative, and crews are rebuilding parts of the campground. There are electric sites, flush toilets, outdoor washing-up sinks and showers, and free firewood when there's no fire ban. Several campers found the grounds quiet and clean and the sites reasonably spaced, and one noted a good phone signal.
A riverside path leads toward Jasper, and there's a small play area for kids. It suits travellers who want a base close to town and can live without shade or trees.
The facilities are the sore point. There's no drinking water and no sani dump on site; both are at Whistlers, a few minutes away. Several guests found the showers only cold in the evening or not working, with gaps between panels, and not enough toilets and showers for the campground's size. Not all loops are open. Fill your tanks before arriving and bring shade.
