Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park sits on an island in Lac La Biche, and visitors describe old forest, quiet sandy beaches, lake views on all sides and big skies full of stars. Deer are common, bears and coyotes are around, and birdwatching is good.
Campsites are well treed, generous and fairly private. Many are big enough for two vehicles and a boat, and each loop has overflow parking. There are powered sites, showers, laundry and a very small store, and campers find the sites and washrooms clean and staff courteous. The town is close enough for supplies.
Trails are the big draw. There are many kilometres of walking and biking paths, and one solo camper hiked the entire island in about seven hours. Paddlers bring kayaks, and paddle boards can be rented at the campground. Fall colours make it a good choice for day hikes too.
The most common caveat is blue-green algae: beaches have been closed to swimming from as early as the July long weekend, so check provincial advisories before planning a beach trip, and rinse off after contact with the water. One camper found standing water and lots of deadfall around the campground. Wind often keeps boats off the lake.
