Kicking Horse Campground sits in a tight mountain valley in Yoho National Park, and the scenery is spectacular from almost every site. Sites by the river are especially liked, as the sound of the water helps drown out other noise. One camper found it a good fallback when everything near Banff was full.
Most reviewers find the grounds well maintained, with a renovated playground, dishwashing areas, flush toilets and free timed showers. Staff get praise for being friendly. Experiences vary, though: one recent group found the showers out of water, wet firewood and a rotting picnic table.
It works well as a base for day trips to Takakkaw Falls, Lake Louise, Banff and Golden. The Spiral Tunnels viewpoint on the Trans-Canada is nearby and worth a stop. Mid-week in late spring, one visitor had plenty of sites to choose from.
Train noise is the big caveat. The CP main line runs along the valley floor across the river, and several light sleepers say the engines, brakes and horns echo all night. Bring good earplugs, ask for a riverside site, and keep firewood covered. Tenters in the overflow area found the ground very hard to get pegs into.
