Hope Lake Campground is tucked away at the end of a long gravel road, and visitors say it's worth the drive. Most sites are large and well treed, so you barely see or hear your neighbours, and the sandy beach and clear water are the main attractions. A few sites are out in the open, so call ahead if privacy matters.

The managers get glowing reviews for being kind, helpful and quick to find a good site. The campground is described as very clean: the beach is groomed every morning, and the outhouses are cleaned daily and don't smell. There's a store with most of what you'd need. There's no power or drinkable water, so bring a generator if you rely on one, and your own drinking water.

It's a strong pick for families. The lake has a floating dock, and in summer the staff have set up a water slide down the hill into the lake. Anglers catch perch and pike right off the dock. It's quiet by 10 pm, and seasonal lots are available at a decent price.

A few caveats. Expect more than 10 km of gravel and washboard to get in, and some sites aren't level. One family who had visited for years reported swimmer's itch after a 10-day trip, so it's worth checking conditions before swimming.
