A clean, well-run KOA just outside Hinton, Alberta, with mountain views, full-hookup pull-throughs and cabins, handy for Jasper National Park. Some find the RV sites tight and pricey.
Hinton / Jasper KOA Holiday sits on the western edge of Hinton, about 8 km from town and shortly before the east gate of Jasper National Park. It's an open, field-like property, and several guests were surprised how good the views of the foothills and Rockies are from their sites. It's set back far enough from the highway that one visitor heard no traffic.
Most reviewers found it spotless. Washrooms, showers and laundry are repeatedly called clean, and the manager gets a lot of personal praise, from staying open late for a last-minute arrival to helping retrieve a lost package. RV sites are gravel pull-throughs with full hookups, tent sites are on grass, and there's a range of cabins. Basic cabins have no water, kitchen or linens, so guests use the communal kitchen with sinks and hot plates.
It works well as a base for the region. Visitors use it for day trips into Jasper, Miette Hot Springs and the Columbia Icefield, and one canoed on nearby Jarvis Lake. There's a playground, a dog park, a covered fire pit area and an indoor play room for toddlers. Hinton has groceries, restaurants and other shopping.
Not everyone is sold. A few RVers found the sites too close together, and one noted that the sewer outlet sits high on the sites. Two reviewers felt the grounds looked neglected, with weeds and uncut grass, for the price of over $70 a night. The town of Jasper is about an hour's drive, which some found long for daily trips. Book ahead in summer, as it can fill up.
